Hi, what would be the best way to transfer larger ammounts of data, that I used former with DrDepth?

I have a lot of data I created in Google Earth as kml files and imported in DrDepth as shorelines or imported tracks and changed them as tracks with applied depth data. I still have the original kml or gpx files, but also the DD Files.

There would be a few ways, but which one would be the best, easyest, quickest result?

For my sl2 logfiles I think the best way would be to reimport the originals in RM?

Hi Hubert,

You can export your tracks from DD as CSV files, which can then import into RM, but if you want to use the sonar viewer you are going to have to import the original log files.
Shorelines can be imported as KML or Shapefiles, or taken from any track within the workspace.

Bear in mind that RM doesn't run on a "one big database" model in quite the same way as DD. Better to import just the tracks you need for particular projects into each workspace. Each workspace is a separate database.

There is no "bulk import" as such, but you can select multiple files of any combination of different types and import them together. If you are importing files in a nested directory structure, then use the search feature in the open file dialog as detailed in this post. In principle, you could search for all files on your drive and import them this way - might take a while tho :)

Ok, I will try. I wasn't able to find the ability to import kml files and it was laborious to change it all in another format just for importing. I could import kml also just as a path and add a depth value afterwards?

One Idea I had was, to make just one csv (txt) file with including depth data out of a number of kml files, that cover one lake / area. So there would be only one file plus a few logfiles plus shoreline / islands.

What I missed a little was a detailled description about changing depth values of an imported gpx or similar. If I set a number in keel offset, how do I have to fill exactly to get centimeters?

Should it be like 1.3 and does this set a marked path without depth data all points to this new values?
How could I set all points of one path in the opposite direction, if I use negative values like -0.4, are the points from one path then encreased by 40 cm?

Last but least: I did mapping some lakes in my area like Lake Chiemsee ~ 80 km² with DrDepth and made rastermaps months ago in at5 format, but it was a lot of work. Now my first 'testlake' from my area with only a few logfiles, some added background map and an overlay with vector at5's was already very impressive. Much less work for a great result ;)

At the moment you can only import KML files directly into projects, as shorelines/islands. You can then change the depth if required in the boundary settings - they will default to zero. You can have any number of shorelines in a single kml file - they will default to islands, so make sure to change the water body outline to shoreline post import.
There is no way to change the depth of a path outside of shorelines. Are you talking about importing paths to use for depth data, or shorelines?

The export from DD as csv's / import in RM worked better than thought. I exported a lot of DD-files in one step and pretty quickly.


My mistake was to search for the possibility to import kmls as a path for using as depth data.

My way in DD was:

Make a picture, scan or whatever from a papermap with depth data or even similar ways to get a picture with depth lines.
Georeference this pic and make an overlay in Google earth, then
trace each line and save them as a path. In erlier versions this path had to be changed from kml to a gpx file.
Import this files and set the zero depth data of all points to the right depth value, shoreline to shoreline.
Render and there is a first finished map. We also have here very good aireal photos in which sandbanks are to be seen very well. They can be used this way for mapping without going over it by boat.

As I just tried, this is possible in RM, if I import gpx tracks and change the depth values with the keel offset. My mistake was, that kml's only could be imported for use as shorelines.
Never the less, these 'shorelines' with depth data could be exported as csv's and reimported as path, already having the right depth values ;) A litle complicated, but works ...

So everything is clear and working, some things could be simplified for the user and some things could be explained detailed in the helpfile, just as an idea ;)

For me important is to have understood the big difference between normal paths and shorelines, already when importing files.

Is it possible some how to import my older tracks converted to Dr. Depth format to Reefmaster? Problem is , that I deleted my sl2 files for these tracks and have only Dr Depth files for them.

open the files with DD and export as csv-files. RM can import csv-files.
Additional: Matt has announced, that RM will be import SS direct with one of the next updates.

As fjordfisher already said:

You could export all your *.drd files in one step with DrDepth as csv-files, but it would be recommended to export only the files of one water in one step and put the *.csv files in a separate folder for each of your waters.

In a second, equally simple and quick step, you can import the *.csv files in your folders to your projects, as you like.

Remember to make a backup copy of all your *.csv files. These csv's can be processed with most GIS programs and need very little space.
