TOPIC: Can't open large files in Sonar Viewer
Can't open large files in Sonar Viewer 11 years 2 months ago #5607

Hi Matt
Like many others I have been keenly waiting for the release of your Sonar Viewer. I'm currently trying out the trial version and have an issue loading large Lowrance .sl2 files. I can load and run files up to 859Mb fine. The next largest file I have is 1.2Gb which generates an error while loading, and crashes the program, as do any files larger than this. So, somewhere between 859Mb and 1.2Gb there seems to be a point at which the issues arises. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) on an i7 with 6gb and an ATI Radeon Graphics card with 4gb on board. |

Hi Jeff,
Yep - those are big files. Do you have a lot of that sort of size? The issue at the moment is that the SV loads the whole file at once, which is great for performance - once it's loaded - but can give memory issues. We are working on an update that will user a slightly lower resolution for very large files, which should at least double the size of file that can be loaded. What is the biggest file you have? I think generally it's not a bad idea to split a days recording into a number of smaller files, as 1GB files can get a bit unwieldy - plus if the file gets corrupted for any reason you can end up losing a lot of data. Thanks for the reply Matt. Yeah, I know I should save a number of smaller files, but it's easy to forget to do it. :-)
My largest is 1.57Gb with a few around 1.2-1.4Gb. most are under 1Gb. Is there currently a fixed upper limit the Viewer will handle (if so what is it?) or does it depend on available memory? The only other thing I haven't been able to do is display the side-scan channel horizontally to maximize the view either side, which is the most important area on side scan obviously. Is it possible to do that or are we limited to vertical display only atm. I really like that I can load and save way points, and display the chart, vessel, track and way points as the sonar scrolls through. Exactly what I had hoped it would do. Good stuff. |

Hi Jeff,
Do you mean that you want to display a single side (port/starboard) ? Or orient the SS at 90 degrees to where it currently is? Any chance you can share one of the files that fails for you via Google Drive or similar (send link to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). If you do, then zip the file first as it will compress a fair bit. thanks, Matt |

Hi Jeff,
It would be really useful if you could share that file - I don't think the issue is entirely related to memory, but also has something to do with the characteristics of the file. For example, we can run 1.9GB SL2 (the biggest we have tested - about 10 hours long in this case) on lower specced machines than yours. It would also be interesting to see your dxdiag output to see if your hardware support is for DX10.1 or 11, as this might also make a difference. So you are talking about showing port and starboard as separate channels, oriented in the same way as the 2D sonar channels? |

No, not left and right channels in separate panels. Both in the one panel but oriented horizontally to allow more display out to the sides. I've edited my previous post to make it a bit clearer (hopefully) :-)

Thanks Jeff. I think I get what you are saying. The flexible layout has to work on either a column first or row first basis (currently column-first), but I agree that it might make more sense to allow the split horizontally instead of vertically so that you can achieve maximum width with the SS channel and still display two other channels. I'll look into it.
You have hardware support for DX 10.1 (the DDI version is the crucial field in dxdiag output). I think this helps to explain what is going on, but it would still be useful to see an example file. |

Yep, that's what I was trying to say Matt. I think it would be a very useful option.
I'll upload the file as soon as I can (I need to organise some online file storage). Thanks for the quick replies. |
