Change settings in IMC before creating map in RM? 12 years 1 month ago #3155

Hi!
Creating at5's with RM is great and saves a lot of time! However, I want to change some settings in IMC and then use RM to generate an at5 map, but I can't save the settings in IMC, and RM launches a fresh copy of IMC with default settings each time. Is there any way I can change a setting in IMC and then generate a map from RM with that setting active?
I remember creating at5's manually, is that still possible with files from RM? How do I get the raster content? I remember a tutorial for the process of creating an at5 map with output files from RM, but I can't find it again?
Best regards,
Markus

Hi Markus,

Yes, you can still create maps manually with the IMC. Export your map as a set of Shapefiles and use these as the vector input to the IMC. You can save your IMC settings as a project in the IMC, which you can then reload.
For a raster project background, you should right-click in the contour view and select Export Raster Background, which will give a .png file and an associated .kml file, which you can then process through the IMC in raster mode.

Thanks for a quick reply Matt.
The vector files are ok, but I can't get a decent raster image.
When I right click and select "Export background raster" the output file is only about 400x400 pixels on a lake that's about 5x5 km's and the IMC map is generated in a second or two. How do I get a larger png image? Should I use export map image instead and set the map size manually?

If I save the settings in IMC, can I make RM use it? Generating a map from RM is so smooth... :-)

That sounds about right for the raster size - it's actually a very low res image (somewhere between 5-15m per pixel), which is all that is really required for the coloured background. The edges will be very blocky, but they should overlap the extent of the shoreline, and will be clipped by a land area polygon that is rendered on top.
If you want to export with a raster background from RM, just set the project colour mode to raster and export as normal. RM will automatically create the raster in this case, and you should see the processing window flash up twice as it passes through vector and raster modes.

Ok, I hadn't set the min and max values correctly in IMC, it works now. Thanks for the info.

In my opinion, if you're ready to go deep into the subject, the manual creation of maps is still the best way. You can use and modify settings that are otherwise default.

For example: Yesterday I have generated a shapefile with major contours at an interval of 0.5 meters. I opened this shapefile with QGIS, kept all even numbers with the specifications 0-19 and changed all the odd numbers to a value 0-12.

So i will get a map with depth contours at a distance of one meter and the additional labeled main lines every half a meter will be visible when zooming in.
