Matt,

I have a humminbird 998HD and due to pixelation problems I'm keeping the firmware at 6.490. Is this a problem with reefmaster?

Shouldn't be a problem. We don't support some very old firmware versions (pre 4), as they did not contain depths but anything since then should be fine.
