I am trying to import an overlay into my project
using both
Import new image and via overlay
It was made in Google and saved as a both a KLM and KMZ file
I get the error
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object.+

Also if I import as a JPEG it imports to the project but in wrong place and I am unable to move

any help is appreciated

Thanks. Is there any chance that you could send the image and kml + kmz files through to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ? I will take a look.
It is possible to calibrate an image in RM; right-click on the icon at the top-left of the image and select "Drag to calibrate". You can then move and size the image as required. Un-check the "drag to calibrate" option when you are done. This is not really a solution to your problem, as it is far better/easier to use the calibration that is already suppplied in the KML file, so it would be good to get to the bottom of this.

Hi Robert,
The issue here is that the KML/KMZ files you sent do not contain an image overlay - they contain a line that describes the outline of your sand bank. What you can do is import this line directly into a user map (import custom path), where you can style it as it you want it to appear on your finished map. You'll probably want to create your user map in the first instance from contours/isobaths generated in a map project.
If you want a filled polygon in your finished map (instead of a line) you need to create polygons in Google Earth instead of lines, and use the import custom polygon function in the user map. Then you can fill the polygon with colour, change opacity etc to suit your map.

I have converted the file you sent to contain a polygon and have sent it to you via email.

If you do want the image to show in RM, you need to create an image overlay in GE and save that. This will create a KML file with the necessary calibration data for RM to position the image correctly. Alternatively, just load the image into RM and calibrate it there.

I am also having trouble with this.
I think my problem is making the file in google earth as all i get in RM is a white polygon.
Is there a simple how to instruction guide / how to guide some one can send me the link to ?

What exactly are you trying to do?
It sounds like you are importing a polygon into a user map - is that right? If so, that is probably the expected behaviour. If you want to import an image for use as a background, you should create a kml file with an image overlay and import that as an image.

Yes, Iam trying to import an image from google earth to use it as a background. I have been trying to do it but can't save it as a kml file.

It is difficult to achieve through legal means. I know at least nothing in this direction and it is no good idea to discuss that in a public forum.

The hard way would be to save your map as a screenshot, georeference it and save as a kml / kmz file.
