Hi gang,
First time poster and s
oon to be user.

I'm gearing up to buy a Lowrance HDS7 to do some ecological mapping of waterways and lakes. It'll be an adaptable setup for optional use on boat, kayak and/or RC boat.

Bit by bit I am learning the ins and outs of how it all works, but had a question I hoped some of you might help me with.

I'm tossing up between the Gen3 or Carbon. The Carbon is circa $800 more with 50/200 and StructureScan.

Do the upgraded features over the Gen3 (namely dual core processor, 2x RAM, double band CHIRP and sonar compatibility through ethernet) equate to any better functionality in ReefMaster/Sonar Viewer?

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron, and welcome to the forum.
As far as I am aware - and I could be wrong here, so someone please step in if so - there won't be a lot of (or indeed any) difference in your sonar log recordings between the two units. I *think* that the main advantage of the carbon is a higher resolution screen (so a better viewing experience on the water), along with faster processor etc. So although there might be good reasons to spend extra on the carbon (it does look like a great unit), I don't think that improved ReefMaster performance is one of them.

The differences:

No difference for use with Reefmaster.

Thanks guys.

Still procrastinating due ot the overload of info and learning!

Now also looking at the cheapest option as a starter (i.e. second hand lower level unit = Elite 4, etc) just to get the ball rolling.

Will post back one I take the leap ;-)

Aaron.

Another quick question... what's the Hummingbird equivalent to the HDS 7 Gen3 or Carbon?

No specifics properties. It was just a broad question as to whether there was an equivalent (thus far I have only looked at the Lowrance gear).
