Thinking about purchasing this item ,but not sure if it would help in my mapping corrections ?
Any thoughts ? would this help in being more accurate ? I know it gives more accurate locations but does it help when I am logging the sonar logs ?

The reciver in Point-1 is more sensetive then the internal reciver, so Yes it will give more accurate posistion. For mapping, place it above your transeducer so depth and position match up.

The internal compass is also a nice help for keeping track of where one is going. ;)
