I have a 32 bit quad core with the max of 4 gb of ram. I have run out of memory to update my map. Is there a way to put less draw on my system to get my maps to regenerate? What does it mean to set to a smaller grid size? If I change the border and cut the lake size down in areas that are shallow with no structure will this help?

32 bit system with 4gb of ram is just only enought to surf the web these days ! Not for map creation... Upgrade your system, you will save a lot of time...

How do I find the surface area of my map? I could cut off some of the areas that I will never use as some of the lake is very shallow. Also I was able to free up some memory by closing out programs running in the backround.

The main influence on how much memory ReefMaster uses when generating a map is the size of the mapped area. This is the area defined by the rectangle that you draw around your tracks in the Define Map project view. You can get a rough idea of how big this area is by using the ruler tool to measure the width and height. With your system, you shouldn't have any trouble creating maps up to about 10 miles across, but other things can have an influence too (other programs running, etc). You could try creating your map in separate parts. One quite easy way to do this is to duplicate your entire map project (right click under the projects list at left of screen), then set your mapped areas to different sections in each of the resulting projects.

For one a 32 bit system can only use about 3.2 gb of that RAM and if you are on a system with the video built into the motherboard it's also going to suck up some of that 3.2 Gb you can address.

I have a 32 bit dual core Windows tablet which only has 2 Gb and shared video memory and it will randomly crash on several mapping program with a lot of data and that I've been running for a few hours ... Sometimes it just crashed the program, sometimes it locks everything up and sometimes but rarely it will Blue Screen. The way Windows crashes it doesn't even log it's a memory problem but I'm sure it is and it's got to do with sharing of system and video memory that is limited to 2 Gb. Lenovo's implementation for Window's Tablets leaves a lot to be desired and is always been a bit buggy and dodgy

I'm looking to upgrade to a 4 core 64 bit system with 4 Gb, there are some Chinese units for under $200 USD with 1080 or better screen resolution and a graphics (drawing) overlay for a pen. Neat thing is it has a modified version of Android that can run my Lowrance Go Free wireless Android app to control my finder
