Am using the trial version of Reef Master prior to a possible purchase. Have been frustrated trying to import a file from Google Earth. I am receiving the following message when attempting to import a file "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". Can't find any info to solve this issue.

What sort of KML file are you trying to import, and where are you importing it to? (as an asset, or as a map boundary?)

I'm trying to import a file from Google Earth as an overlay to a sidescan mosaic, thus an asset. Have also tried to import a shoreline file from GE w/o success. Am I trying to do something that is possible or not ? Thank you for the prompt response.

Apparently my problem was with GE as I can now export/import KLM and KMZ files. However when I import a file, and then add a sidescan track, they do not lineup. As I have read one cannot calibrate a GE file, so now what have I done wrong ?

It's hard to know exactly what the issue is without a better sense of what you are trying to do. Can you post a screen shot?
Generally, KML files are used by ReefMaster either for map boundaries (shorelines and islands) or to import background images. Boundaries need vector polygons to be in the KML file, whilst background images should be ground overlays, and there should also be an accompanying image file.

My goal with Reefmaster is to create custom maps that include sidescan mosaics for display on my Lowrance HDS unit. I have imported sidescan logs into the background map. See attachment 1. I then assumed that I could add an image that reflected a higher resolution map of the body of water that the logs covered. So I downloaded a KMZ file of the area and imported it into the map shown on attachment 1. The result is shown in attachment 2. As you can see the higher resolution image does not align with the basemap nor the sidescan mosaic.

Am I attempting something that is not possible with Reefmaster. If possible, what am I missing ? I am very reluctant to spend $200 unless I am confident my goal can be accomplished.

It is possible to overlay sidescan mosaics onto high resolution imagery (and get excellent results). I think your problem is that you are using a Google Earth background that is not georeferenced (at least, I couldn't get georeferenced tiles from g.e - perhaps there is a way)??Your sidescan mosaic should be pretty spatially accurate ( a couple of meters usually if you had egnos / waas enabled), but as the g.e. Base imagery is not georeferenced, your coordinates won't line up with the image.

It's all to do with licensing from g.e., but if you hunt around you might just find a website that you can get georeferenced tiles that will be what you are after.... Try putting in a search for sas planet.... ;-) worked for me and I got high resolution background for my project.... But as I said, maybe there is a way to use google earth images - I just never found it....
