Now we have to create our shorlines in google earth or with the edit tool in RM. Isn't there an easy way to extract map boundaries from OpenStreetMap for a certain region or just use the land contours in the background OpenStreetMap in RM as shoreline, that would be really a big time saver and is more than good enough for the most of us I think? Matt would it be difficult to program this in the next 2.0 version of RM? I think the biggest problem for this is the export of the shorelines for AT5 maps I guess?
Don't know where to start in one of the more complex waters I’m fishing, in this one I have to make a huge amount of Islands …

I agree that map boundaries can be a pain, but at the moment we don't have any automatic way of acquiring them. Users in the US can download and use shapefiles from the NOAA site, but I do not know of an equivalent in Europe. Do you have any way of getting hold of Shapefiles for the lakes you want?
There are some tools within QGis that allow you to select OSM regions and download selected features as vector objects. I had a go for the area that you posted, but unfortunately I don't think that the results are usable "as is" within RM, due to the large number of pieces that shorelines are cut into. It's possible that you could turn these into suitable shapefiles for use in RM by doing a bit of work merging areas in QGis, but this is not something I am familiar with.

Indeed it is a real pain for that specific area! I'm playing with JOSM for the moment. For some shorelines it's usable but others also consist of a large number of pieces.
Gonne play some more with JOSM hope to find a way to merge those pieces in to one polygon.
Thanks for thinking with me ;-)

@kvdc, have you already figured out how to export boundaries from JOSM?

I'm using the following steps to do this:
1 Create a new layer in JOSM and save it as osm file. And choose OpenStreetMap Carto for imagery.
2 Download the water as object (Ctrl+shift+o) in JOSM. The water id can be found while editing in www.openstreetmap.org/. This is either a way or relation.
3 When adding multiple water id's, make sure you don't download them as separate layer.
4 Select the area's that are adjacent to each other. Use the function "Join overlapping Areas" under tools to make one multipolygon.
5 Export the *.osm file to GPX. Import this in RM for your boundaries.

This saves me a lot of time!

You have to keep in mind that RM only can have one shoreline. When editing the *.osm file this can be tricky, especially with large water systems (vooral hier met al die polders...:-) ) When you have an island in your *.osm project you can make them separate (a new layer & *.osm) and then import them as island in RM.

If waters are not adjacent to each other because of a bridge, draw notes so they are connected. Then select en join them.

Hi K. vd Cauter,

No problem to have personal contact. But I think it's better discuss some tip/tricks/problems on this forum so everyone can benefit.
