I have been creating my own AT5 color palettes playing around with differnt schemes but cant seem to get the colors JUST right....
do any of the more experienced users have examples of the color bars they would like to share or exchange??

Im looking for pallete that will be good to view on HDS gen 1
as well as older lms units?
im open to suggestion if anyone wants to share their expertise please upload

I had the same issue as you but I only have a HDS unit. I found that the more "pastel" shades gave the best background. I've set mine up so the colours change every 2 metres. On one map I have a range of 32 metres so I have a 16 colour palette, ranging from pink in the shallows to darker blue at the depths. This is contrary to what a lot of forum members have done but I find it easier to see.

I do a lot of trolling with lures so a quick glance at the plotter tells me if I'm heading for a shallower reef.

Not sure if this helps you but here are the palette numbers I'm currently using (92, 62, 98, 61, 97, 68, 16, 176, 11, 73, 182, 218, 253, 252, 18, 240).

Don't want to de rail but how do you change the colours and the depth increments for which they're displayed?

And regarding palettes on HDS/LMS - I didn't manage to find one common palette so I make two versions of the at5 - one for LMS and one for HDS.

Changing the depth increments was as easy as editing the palette and matching the number of palettes to the depth range. In my example, I have a depth range of 0 to 32 metres. My custom palette has 16 different colours i.e. 2 metres per colour.

Its a very good idea, but practically unworkable. Certainly the standard is designed to keep vessels off shallows, and make hazards more obvious, but if you start standardising the opposite depiction where exactly are you going to set your maximum (dark blue)?
Its pretty easy when its shallows you are marking because it doesnt get any shallower than zero (hence you can set a colour for 5ft, one for 10 ft and it will remain a standard no matter what depth the lake is), but if you are marking depths you need to set a standard colour for a set depth, and thats pretty much a variable dependent upon lake and technique. Some of the chaps here are fishing fjords over 1000ft deep, others are fishing sand pits with a depth range of 30ft.

I think a variable range colour set is about as standard as you'll get it.

Well, I ment it mostly as a joke :) I see no need to have a fishing standard really, but it would look different to the IHO if it were to exist.

What I have done is to use a fixed scale down to 50m, I rarely fish in lakes witout 30m depts. One lake which is well over 100m deep and where I fish at 35m depths has its own scale :)
