I have built my first at5 file and will try it out on the water tomorrow.

In IMC I added 2 files:
1) OSM of area around the lake. lake.osm.pbf
2) Polygons for sonar logging paths from log_path.shp (done with QGIS)

Output files from IMC are
./BoundAT5s:
log_plan_Large.at5 log_plan_Medium.at5 log_plan_Small.at5

I will put them in the root of the microsd and see what happens.

I am looking for information on how at5 files are used from the card.

The user manual shows
Chart Settings -> Chart Data -> Lowrance|Navionics

Pointers to how to information are welcome

The osm file runyon-lake.osm.pbf displayed immediately.

The shp file with polygon path tracks did not appear.

How can I layer shapes on top of the xxx.osm.pbf?

What was the source of the polygon Shapefile? You say QGis, but did you export directly from QGis and, if so, did you set up the required attributes for the IMC? If not, then nothing will show.

What I would recommend is this: Create your OSM map in the way you have done, but without the polygon file (or just keep the map you made already, since the polygons don't appear anyway). Then create your polygon map directly from RM - just export the user map (right click, write to file) and choose Lowrance AT5. This will create another set of AT5 map files which you can also copy to your SD card (alongside the OSM AT5 files). They should show on top of the OSM map.

The unit will load and display all of the AT5 map files it finds on the card, so if you structure your maps this way then you don't need to regenerate the full OSM map every time you want to change the map on top.

Direct from QGIS with no attributes setup. I'm planning to learn more about
ESRI shapefiles and editing them. Can you point me to documentation on
the attributes needed for at5 display?

You need to read the PDF document that ships with the IMC - all of the required attributes are described in there. If you export from RM in the Shapefile format, then these will be provided. A much easier option for you if you just want to export the polygons you had in your user map.
