Hi all,
After enduring endless "Reefmaster is not responding" messages I have decided it is time to update my notebook PC. I'm retiring my Win7 x64 i7 8G Alienware machine (4 years old).

So I'm after suggestions about processor, memory, SSD only or combination of HDD and SSD etc...

My usual method is to buy the best specification machine that I can afford.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Meggs

Hi Meggs,
That sounds like a reasonable spec machine, although I know you've had issues in the past with RM speed (and other apps on that machine?). There may be something that needs fixing on the machine you have?

That said, bigger is always better and I think the best speed up you will get is from a decent amount of memory (although the 8GB you have is pretty good) and an SSD.

Does it have to be a laptop?

Hi Matt,

I prefer to have a notebook. I'm "retired" so I spend a fair bit of my time travelling. I do use a second 24 inch monitor when I'm at home.

I'm considering a MSI notebook - Win 8.1 32G 4x256g SSD in a RAID configuration + 1TB HDD. Expensive but looks pretty good.

Cheers,
Meggs

So far so good. New machine is all SSD, lots of memory, fast processor, graphics and basically goes like a rocket.

My largest map project still takes about 10 minutes to draw but that is a third the time it used to take. Mosaics draw really fast and the show mosaic window now tracks the mouse. It used to lag behind which made using this option painful.

And so far no "Reefmaster is not responding" messages...
