I have a GPSMAP 541s that I haven't installed yet. This forum lists it as a unit that can collect data for use with RM.

From the owner's manual I see that this can be done by sending NMEA data to a data logger or a PC with appropriate SW. It it possible to log this data on the SD card instead/as well?

I hope so because it would mean one less gadget to carry around and one less gadget to fail.

You can log directly to the SD card, and should do whether you are sending direct to NMEA or not. The format will be ADM, which is only readable with "Homeport". You will then need to export the data from homeport into a format that retains the depth values. I'd suggest csv as it gives you the opportunity to remove dodgy data in excel before chucking it at RM to do its business on. You'll be able to make charts for your 541s as well.
