Having freely available raster charts as background images would be ever so handy.
.
?attachments policy/preferences?: I am used to having to link to external images rather than fill up a forum server with attachments . . .

This is the first lesson ye should learn: There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, it doesn't behoove any of us to speak evil of the rest of us.

BSB raster cards is not a problem, if You can open this charts i a GIS application and export this as geotiffs (as far as possible in high resolution). As i remember this was e. g. ArcGIS and Global Mapper (QGIS/GrassGIS/SagaAGIS - i don't know)

This geotiffs You can direct prcess in the IMC to raster AT5.

While it is of course a simple matter for anyone who regularly uses GIS applications I have to agree with GeorgeLewisRay. The huge majority of folks just want to click and go - and not have to play around in other applications. It's dead easy to download a NOAA BSB chart, it would be a real bonus if it was just as simple to chuck it straight into RM.

We actually do have code to do it - including batch conversion of sets of BSBs (e.g. a State or region set downloaded from NOAA). All files are converted to MBTiles for easy use within RM as background maps (BSBs roated and trimmed as required), with automatic selection of the appropriate zoom level (i.e. changing through chart scales with zoom). At some point I guess we will polish it up a bit and release it, probably as a standalone application that can be used to convert to MBTiles, which can then be used in RM (or elsewhere). Probably also need to have the legals checked..

The BSB options appears good for US user (NOAA). In europe the quality of BSB charts is not so practicable especially for angling. The sample from a HDS unit show an older BSB chart. If zooming, the quality fast fall, defiance 400 dpi.

Its a very simple format, and one that is easy for amateur chartmakers to produce. Several countries have free BSB charts available in a range of scales. (look for RNC - Raster Navigational Chart)
