It is not always too easy to calibrate the background imagery in RM, so why not add support for geo-referenced images like GEOTIFF or world files (tfw, jgw, pgw etc.) Then it would be so much easier :-)

We can and should add support for more calibrated file types. The next release has support for MBTiles, which is a format that contains tiled images in a single database file and very useful for background maps. In the mean time, the current release does support KML, and you should be able to find conversion tools for most other file types.

And yes, you are correct, as usual. It is not too much work to go via a KML file.
