spent several days tediously defining the map boundary of my lake point by point.
all is well, but is there a way to export a map boundary to a shape file?
under Map Boundaries, I see new, import, and delete but no export option
The administrator has disabled public write access.
Calculate the map, right click, select add to map, shorelines. Double click on your file you just created in the "Maps" section, right click, write to file, shapefile. Will create both polygons and polyline files for your shorline and islands..

If you export your map as usual and select 'shapefile' as target file format, you will get some shapefiles including your bounndaries and Islands. You do not have to add your shorelines to a user map first.
Two ways with the same result.
