Great program - have just purchased it & have started mapping a little part of a river & a small local lake.

What i was wondering - will the bottom composition maps display fallen timber in the rivers i'm mapping?
Whats the minimum approximate size of an object required to provide a hardness reading before it will display correctly on a map?
eg. On a river thats only 15m wide - will a 1m wide log in the river display correctly?
I don't have sidescan - I map from my kayak with a elite 4 Hdi unit.
If it will display timber - does anyone have an example they would be willing to share?
If it looks right i'll purchase 'the bottom composition option as well.

Sorry - i just noticed i posted in the wrong area - please move to the correct location

Thanks

Troy

Hi Troy,

I don't think bottom composition would be useful for locating timber - most of the time any timber is going to lie above the bottom and won't even be considered by bottom hardness calculations.

Sidescan would be the most effective method - just reviewing track and waypointing areas of timber (perhaps drawing polygons around bigger areas in a user map).
Although you wouldn't get the coverage of SS, you could do the same with your downscan which gives a very clear view of timber underneath the boat. Review the DS in the sonar viewer and add waypoints in the sonar viewer as you go.
