I am looking to connect a Simrad NSS7 EVO2 to a Raymarine SeatalkNG network which includes a C125 MFD. Data logged by the Raymarine MFD is apparently encrypted and cannot therefore be loaded into RM. Connecting the Simrad to the Seatalk network should allow the depth data to be displayed on the NSS unit. There will not be a transducer connected to the Simrad soI expect there will not be any ability to log actual sonar data.

The Simrad needs to serve 2 functions. Firstly it will be used to display existing custom maps I have successfully produced in Reefmaster. Secondly, I would like to be able to record new data which will consist of old school position and depth data only which I then wish to process in RM.

From what I have been able to establish, recording a trail in the Simrad will record the necessary data. However, I am not sure that exporting the trails via either GPX or USR formats will transfer the necessary depth data.

I would be grateful for any suggestions from the RM community on how best to go about this.

As far as I know Raymarine version of GPX works well in RM, although Raymarine has a tendency to change the layout in their GPX-files from time to time so RM needs to update accordingly. If you send a file or two through to RM I’m sure they will fix this again as they have done several times for me in the past.

No, neither USR or GPX from Simrad contains depth. This is a result of Navico and Navionics having a litle fight over data-ownership a few years ago. After that fight Navico removed depth from the GPX-files in all current and future products to avoid their customers uploading to Navionics.

In short - get a ducer for the Simrad and log sonar in SLG/ SL2/ SL3. It far outshines the C125 as a fishfinder anyway.

If I understand you correctly, I can simply record tracks on the Raymarine and export them via GPX and they will have positions and depths which RM should then be able to read. If that it the case, then there would be no need to even connect the Simrad to the SeaTalk network.

I tend to agree with your comments that Simrad is better than Raymarine. The NSS7 is actually surplus to requirements as I replaced it with an NSS9 EVO3 a few weeks ago because I needed a larger screen. I am running a TM260 as the primary 'ducer and there is a noticeable improvement in picture quality with the EVO3 over the EVO2.

I will be lending the old NSS7 to a friend who has the Raymarine MFD. He likes my RM maps but Raymarine does not make it easy to use them.
