Yeah it is good, but a word of warning: it *seems* that using the real-time structure overlay can cause some timing issues when logging sonar, and produce some quite strange, variable, intra-file latencies. I have observed this myself on an Elite 7, and have seen and heard reports of it on some other HDS units as well. It is not totally confirmed that this is the case, but the problem does not seem to occur when the overlay is not running so for that reason I no longer use it when collecting data (which is a shame, as it is very useful for seeing where you have mapped!). If you do try it, I'd be interested to hear if you get the same issues.
As for me, I can't see any latency/ timing issues with live mapping on Ti-7, but stopped to use smf for another reason - weird bug in firmware (in initial and in latest) - I can see .smf only once - just after creation. If I restart unit, it become impossible to view saved structure overlay.

Sorry, what is ".smf"?

Hmmm... two Elite 7ti users and both finding bugs in the firmware. That's not very reassuring... Perhaps I should spend more and get the HDS7? Or is buggy firmware "normal" for Lowrance gear?

Small addition - you don't need to physically swap SD, you may transfer logs via FTP, use Reefmaster to create map and upload new map to device.
Elite TI WiFi can work as hotspot, so you need only laptop with FTP client and Reefmaster.

So you say the Elite Ti provides a FTP-Server, is this right?

Do you have more informations about?
Like:
Is there a user, password needed to access?

Is the tfp server always running?
Or only if the Ti runs as a Hotspot?

FTP or also FTPS?

smf - Structure Map File, created from sidescan data inside device.
And yes, seems buggy firmware is "normal" for near all Lowrance products. And, nevertheless, Lowrance units is one of the best...

Yes, it provides ftp server, always running.
Anonymous access, no need in user/pwd.
Don't check FTPS, no need.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I am looking for a logger compatible with Lowrance Total Scan units. I do not need/want a screen as the boat will be autonomous. I would like to record the data then view it in reef master. Bonus points if it can output a live NMEA 0183 stream that I can transmit for live depth mapping.

Thanks

The Elite Ti are a pretty decent low cost option. I run the 7 on a kayak with the totalscan and it is a nice setup. I assume (but haven't checked) that the Elite 5 Ti would work just as well for logging, at an even lower price point.

Is there any option out there without a screen? Only a simple unit to log.

Are there other sonars/depth transducers out there working in a simpler manner?

Thank you

How simple? You can get "active transducers" that simply output depth data via NMEA, but they are not really cheap enough to warrant using IMO. What functionality do you require? Sonar logging or just depth? If you use an active transducer you will still need a way to generate GPS position data, plus a way of logging depth & position data. You can get all of that, plus sonar and sidescan logging in an Elite 5 Ti, or get something like and Elite 4 - which is very affordable - to log depth/position/sonar (no sidescan).
