Hi Trevor,

Could you publish an example? So we get an impression of what quality you are achieving?
Which brands are unit models are you using for your sidescans?

Thanks Trevor!

I second Danny - some pictures would be great.

This is something that I´m working on also, mapping shipwrecks and archaeological site´s. It would interesting to see examples that others are working on. It should be no problem for me to put here also some examples later on, when software will be ready.

Hi, sorry for the delay - been a bit busy publishing a book.

These image may not look much, but these ancient vessels are actually under 1ft of mud and not visible to my video system at all - just a flat lakebed. The georeferenced pngs enable me to plonk them exactly in place, and use them as a targets for further scans and ultimately investigation by the Underwater Archaeology Unit

I was able to pick this out of some imagery in RM the other day. It was taken on a turn, hence the smearing at the left of the image.
This is (almost certainly )the wreck of a vessel which sank in 1828 with the loss of 19 lives. It's been looked for many times, but with more than a little help from Matts wonderful creation we've been able to pin it down at last. I was able to video it after getting this imagery, the videos are on my website (wrecks, caislean nua)

Those cannons look mighty long, any idea of scale ?. The sonar shadows of a couple of them look quite extreme too. Was this a towfish flying low ?

scan with a towfish at 3 knts and 3 m low
canons are 3,4 m Long, they are put out board near the ship.
wreek as 55 m x 15 m, the square blocs are only the lest made with old reformed canons.
Towfish is hibryd system, Humminbird / LSS2 Lowrance

i make my first mosaïc with reef, it's easy and nice
i use OpenCpn too.

Sorry if this is a bit off the core thread of using Reefmaster for the Sidescan mosaic for Archaeological mapping topic (Matt if you feel this is too far off topic feel free to pull it down)

I too have been using Side scan sonar to find and document shipwreck sites for a number of years (I use an old Klein 595 Side scan) but in addition to mosaic software I have started using Structure from Motion to document the specific sites. I feel this may also be of interest to some of the responders to this topic.

Basically it provides a automated way to get photo mosaics of the wreck/area of interest similar to the images below comprised of around 500 odd individual images

or

I have mainly collected the raw images as a swimming diver but have also collected the base images from a diver scooter and a small ROV

Sorry for the redirect but have a look at a thread at OpenROV on how I have been doing this if you are interested in the technique
