Don't get too focused on there being a solution provided that would pre-lock to the serial...that won't happen. Also, don't get focused on there being a solution provided that would allow this to work on a HDS Gen 1...that also won't happen. I know both of those are wanted but I need to manage expectations.

I'm only interested in whether or not the solution proposed meets your need or it defeats the purpose.

Is it possible to encrypt the data on a card in a way that it cannot be copied?

Let us go back to the initial proposal by Greg:

They only way we can offer this functionality is through a special encryption that would allow cards to be distributed in a ready to be encrypted state and once they are inserted into a chart plotter (with the necessary software), the ready to be encrypted AT5 files on the card could be encrypted to that device.

I guess this would be a free service too ? If yes, I can live with it that the AT5 files are only locked to a device after it's first use on that device. If I provide a self made chart to one of my friends, he will have to bring in his unit so I can initialize the maps on his unit myself.
