If you wish to export multiple map projects as a single AT5 map, you might run into a few issues if the bounding areas of the maps overlap. Here is how to do it:

1. For the land polygon to be generated correctly, all contours and shorelines must be exported together in a single export operation. To do this, you will need to create a User Map and add the contours from each map project, and then export the user map. It is also possible to add each set of project contours to a separate user map, and then export all user maps together by multi-selecting them in the asset library and using the right-button menu -> write to file. It is not possible to export the contours for more than one map directly from the contour view, you must use an intermediate map.

2. Background rasters may appear incorrectly on the unit if the bounding boxes for the selected maps overlap. This image shows an example - note the white area.



This happens because the export raster function in the contour view uses a white (not transparent) background, and the background of one raster is overlapping the other. We made the white background decision to avoid the black borders in the finished AT5 map that can occur in transparent areas, although we may add an option to use transparent in light of this issue.

If you do have this problem, there is a workaround that involves exporting a map image from the contour view. This will also give a "nicer" raster image, in that the edges will be clipped to shorelines - the standard export raster function relies on clipping from the land polygon in the final AT5 vector layer. This method can also give you a higher resolution background raster, if you are noticing any pixellation of the background on your unit - this normally only happens for very small maps.

In the contour view, turn off grid lines and hide all waypoints. In the contour settings, adjust the major interval to maximum and turn off minor contours. This should give a map with very few or no contours lines - effectively just a clipped background raster.



Click Export Map Image



In the export image window, uncheck "show frame and scale", increase the size of the image to approx 1m per pixel, make lines as thin as they can be and, if you want to, you can also change the colour of the shoreline to match your palette's zero depth colour - this will effectively hide the outline.

Now save the map, making sure the background is set to transparent and that "generate Google Earth calibration file" is checked.

To use the raster in the Insight Map Creator, you will need to first process the png and kml files using "keyhole" mode, which generates the necessary .pgw world file. From there the process is the same as normal.

That way I made my rastermaps with DD already for a while and that way I also generated my first one with RM.

I made an export of this rastermap in the highest possible resolution and set the contour intervals to maximum (to eliminate these lines), disabling minor contours. I also disabled 'show excluded area as land'.

This Picture including the calibration file I imported in a GIS Program like Global Mapper or the freeware QGis, added a background map and exported the whole map in each resolution needed for InsightMapCreator, e.g. 1m / px up to 64m / px. If there are several colored shadings of lakes, one could add it to this map in a single step.

In case of colored rectangles around the shadings, I used a graphic program like Gimp to remove the white area around. This takes just a few klicks. You mustn't change resolution or size of the original picture.

These generated background map including the shading(s) in all needed resolutions were processed with IMC.

For the vector overlay I used the normal export function of RM. I only used the generated sets for major and minor contours and deleted the 'polys' set, so that I got only the bathymetric lines in my vector at5. Actually this also should work with more than one set of shapefiles, rendered in only one process or in single processes? I have not tried this yet.

This way of mapping is more work like the kind, that RM offers, but maps with raster background around the water look pretty good and help navigating.








For that way of mapping I just missed a feature in RM:
The contour intervals should be set to such a great value, that there no bathymetric lines will apeare, minimum 200 m, or as a better idea to disable the generation / displaying of contour lines.
